Biography

Sebastien Leon
Lives and works in Los Angeles, California
Sebastien Leon’s works bring to life ethereal physical environments that are at once tangible yet entirely abstract. His compositions map imagined spaces that seemingly stretch far beyond the borders of each piece, imbuing them with a palpable sense of spatial infinity evocative of the wonders of the cosmological world. Abstract mathematical forms and geometric figures commingle with dripping paint and splashes of bright colors, resulting in a unique visual quality that is both meticulous and deliberate, but also uninhibited and spontaneous.
Leon deftly layers strong lines and repetitive figures to achieve an expansive, three-dimensional quality in his painting and drawings. Working in both bright color and monochrome, the artist’s compositions are deeply textured and detailed, drawing the viewer into a mesmerizing optical rhythm. In addition to using traditional media such as acrylics and ink, Leon experiments with non-traditional media borrowed from the world of construction, including plaster, asphalt, fluorescent tape, acrylic spray, and latex paint.
For the artist, these works can be interpreted as an allegory of the mind, always mutable and longing to stretch beyond its materiality. He is particularly inspired by New York, a city that much like the mind is constantly in flux and transforming itself. An avid traveller who originally hails from Orléans, France, Leon is also deeply influenced by nature. He seeks experiences that allow him to feel connected to the environment and strives to echo the sacred connection between man and Earth in his work.
