Biography

Elizabeth Stockton
Lives and works in Atlanta, GA

Elizabeth Stockton’s richly varied aesthetic brings to life works that are visually diverse yet share a singular essence derived from the careful layering of paint on canvas. Her quietly compelling abstractions display a dexterous use of color and depth, and belie the artist’s formal training as a graphic designer. At once minimalist and ethereal, her works evoke a cool serenity and composed tranquility.
Stockton’s artistic process is purposely guided by action and momentum, each canvas a conduit for a specific temporal emotion or concept. The chromatic variability of her work is the result of this intuitive practice, in which abstraction and color take forceful precedence. Color in particular is charged with emotion, with pure white taking on a markedly focal character. In many of her works, the final layer of paint is often a shimmering veil of white, which serves to create a captivating iridescence and alluring inscrutability.

Childhood memories of the coast of Stockton’s native Georgia deeply inform the context of her work. The enormity of the Georgian seascape, with its seemingly endless horizon, had a strong impact on the artist’s aesthetic sensibilities. In fact, according to Stockton “decades later, my abstract oils can be viewed as metaphorical interpretations of that mysterious line and the surrounding landscape.”
